Sending your phone to a buyback company: packaging, proof and tracking

Once you have accepted the offer, the device travels to the buyback company, which checks it before paying you. A well-prepared parcel protects the phone in transit and gives you proof if there is a disagreement about its condition. Allow ten minutes to get it ready.

1. Note the IMEI and keep proof

Dial *#06# to display the IMEI number (two numbers for a dual-SIM phone) and write it down. Then photograph the phone switched on, with a white or light screen displayed, followed by each side and each edge. A short video showing the device working is even better.

This evidence will help you if the buyback company finds a defect that the device did not have when it left you.

2. Erase the phone and remove your accounts

Before packing anything, reset the phone and remove it from your accounts (Apple Account and Find My on iPhone, Google account and manufacturer account on Android). This is the most common reason buyback companies reject a device. Our detailed guides for iPhone and Android explain every step.

3. Remove what should not be sent

  • SIM card and microSD card.
  • Case, cover and tempered glass screen protector (unless the buyback company asks otherwise).
  • Accessories: only send the charger, cable or box if they are requested. They are rarely taken into account in the price and are not always returned.

4. Pack it properly

  • Use the original box if you have it, or a small rigid box.
  • Wrap the phone in bubble wrap or a cloth, with the screen protected.
  • Pad it so that it does not move when the parcel is shaken.
  • Seal it with strong tape. Avoid soft envelopes, which will not stop a screen from breaking.

A phone with a swollen battery must not be shipped: tell the buyback company, which will explain what to do.

5. Use the label provided and keep the tracking details

Most buyback companies provide a prepaid label, often with insured shipping. Stick it on the parcel, drop it off at the specified point and keep the drop-off receipt and the tracking number until you have been paid.

6. After it arrives

The buyback company checks the device: appearance, functionality, locks. If everything matches your declaration, the offer is confirmed and payment follows within the stated time. If not, it makes you a counter-offer: you can accept it, or refuse it and ask for the device to be returned, according to its terms.

Frequently asked questions

Is shipping free?
With most buyback companies, yes: a prepaid label is provided once you accept the offer. Check this before choosing; it is shown in the QuizzBuy comparison.
What if the parcel is lost or damaged?
Contact the buyback company with your tracking number and drop-off receipt. If the shipment was insured through its label, it is up to the company to handle the claim with the carrier.
How long after sending my phone will I be paid?
The clock starts when the device is received and checked. The timeframe varies between buyback companies, from a few days to around two weeks: it is shown for each one in our comparisons.
